On September 5 and 7, 2023, two online trainings on “Green Chemistry in the Circular Economy” were conducted in Ukraine as part of the Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Networking Programme (GreenChem). Organized by the RECP Centre Ukraine, the events targeted professionals and researchers in the fields of chemistry, circular economy, and environmental protection.
The first session, tailored for participants with basic chemistry knowledge, focused on practical applications of green chemistry for waste reduction and renewable resource use. The second, more advanced session explored molecular design techniques to minimize chemical hazards and introduced possible green alternatives to persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
Opening remarks were delivered by Yurii Bondarenko from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine and Andrii Vorfolomeiev, Director of the RECP Centre. Both emphasized the critical role of circular economy and sustainable chemical practices in Ukraine’s green transition.
Trainers Olena Tabachuk and Oleksandr Khokhotva led the sessions, which included interactive tasks such as predicting compound biodegradability and calculating the atomic efficiency of pharmaceutical synthesis routes.
The trainings underscored Ukraine’s growing capacity and interest in green chemistry, supported by a dynamic innovation ecosystem, evolving regulatory frameworks, and ongoing international cooperation under the GreenChem Programme — which will continue in Ukraine over the next six years.
