Yale University seeks an experienced and mission-driven Director to serve as Consortium Director for the newly launched International Green Chemistry Consortium, supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. This individual will lead the coordination of a globally distributed network of green chemistry researchers across Yale University (USA), McGill University (Canada), Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (Germany), and the University of Nottingham (UK).
The successful candidate will be an expert in green chemistry with demonstrated experience in international collaboration, proposal development, and research administration. They will be responsible for executing the Consortium’s strategic vision, overseeing programmatic activities, facilitating high-level scientific engagement, and managing the Consortium’s operations to ensure the delivery of impactful, interdisciplinary research outcomes aligned with the Moore Foundation’s Green Chemistry Initiative. This position requires international travel on a regular basis.
Key Responsibilities:
Scientific and Strategic Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Consortium’s Principal Investigator and co-investigators to implement a shared scientific agenda across partner institutions.
- Stay current with global developments in green chemistry to ensure programmatic activities reflect leading-edge science.
- Support the design and refinement of research initiatives focused on key areas: molecular dynamics, non-covalent interactions, complex mixture control, and molecular design for reduced toxicity.
Consortium Coordination and Program Implementation:
- Lead day-to-day management of the Consortium, ensuring timely delivery of milestones and outputs across all institutions.
- Oversee internal communication among collaborators and serve as the primary point of contact for coordination between Yale and partner institutions.
- Support the development, submission, and refinement of international, multi-institutional research proposals aligned with Consortium objectives.
Research Administration and Reporting:
- Track and document progress toward program goals using clear metrics and timelines.
- Prepare regular reports for funders and stakeholders; synthesize outputs for broader dissemination.
- Coordinate compliance with Yale and funder policies related to budget, travel, subawards, and data sharing.
Event Planning and Network Development:
- Plan and execute international symposia, proposal development workshops, and thematic working group meetings.
- Build and maintain relationships with researchers, institutions, and professional networks in the global green chemistry community.
- Facilitate collaboration among early-career and senior researchers to catalyze new research partnerships and training opportunities.
Communications and Outreach:
- Oversee the development of the Consortium’s communications platforms, including a public-facing website, event materials, social media, and open-access tools.
- Represent the Consortium at scientific meetings and public forums to build awareness and engagement.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Minimum 5 years of experience in program management, scientific coordination, or research administration, with direct involvement in multi-institutional or international projects.
2. Demonstrated familiarity with the global green chemistry community and networks across academia, industry, and policy.
3. Deep knowledge of cutting-edge green chemistry research, including current trends, major funding priorities, and technical challenges.
4. Proven experience in developing and supporting successful research proposals, including writing, collaboration coordination, and funder engagement.
5. Strong interpersonal and organization skills; ability to management complex schedules, teams, and deliverables across time zones and cultures.
6. Excellent written, and oral communication skills; adept at scientific synthesis and stakeholder communication.
7. Strong organizational, strategic planning, and problem-resolution skills.
8. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and work effectively under pressure.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Advanced degree in Chemistry, Green Chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field with deep expertise in the principles and practices of green chemistry.
2. Extensive experience in higher education administration or a related field, with progressively senior management or leadership positions.
3. Content knowledge in specific areas relevant to the role, acquired through direct work experience or coursework.
4. Experience with financial management, budgeting, and grant administration.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
