This ECHA science seminar features an interdisciplinary project team, Dr Angela Bearth, Dr Gro Haarklou Mathisen and Dr Paul Whaley, all leading experts in their respective fields of applied social psychology, chemical risk assessment, and systematic review and evidence appraisal. They present a tool, INVITES-IN, for assessing the internal validity (reliability) of in vitro studies, with a view to supporting the evaluation and use of such studies in regulatory hazard and risk assessment. They developed this tool in the context of the Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC). INVITES-IN is the sibling tool of INVITES-EX, which is being developed for assessing the external validity (relevance) of in vitro studies.
Who should attend?
This session is useful for professionals in environmental and human health hazard and risk assessment, chemical regulation, and researchers working on the development and validation of non-animal test methods for substances.
What you will gain
By the end of the seminar, you will:
- Develop familiarity with the concept of the "internal validity" of in vitro studies, and how its assessment can support the use of these types of studies in chemical hazard and risk assessment.
- Have the opportunity to discuss how assessing internal validity relates to the concept of “retrospective validation” and its potential importance in using non-guideline studies in hazard and risk assessment.
- Gain knowledge of how study appraisal is evolving, along practical skills in study assessment, that should be applicable to a number of appraisal contexts in hazard and risk assessment, not just in vitro studies.
