Nalo(TM) C12,C14 non-palm-derived fatty alcohols, from Future Origins

Future Origins is commercializing high-volume production of widely-used C12/C14 fatty alcohols (FALCs) from non-palm sources. Our Nalo™-brand FALCs provide a  *drop-in* alternative for a >3 million ton market that offers a traceable, deforestation-free supply chain critical to making surfactants that touch *billions* of consumers. We’ve developed super-efficient engineered microorganisms using biotechnology to deliver competitive economics and an estimated 68% reduction in GHGs. The economics are strongly validated by already having signed a binding offtake agreement for a majority of the first planned commercial plant (50,000 tpa). Product quality and ‘drop-in-ness’ has been validated by three major firms in this ecosystem, for both our FALCs and key derivatives. FID is planned for 2026, with startup in 2029.

Our innovation and potential impact has already been recognized with the 2025 ACS Green Chemistry Challenge Award; and with an ICIS Innovation Award, both for our category and as the overall winner for 2025.

Future Origins is a joint venture formed by Genomatica (technology partner) along with large investments by industry majors Unilever, Kao and L’Oreal. We benefit from Genomatica's strong commercialization track record with bio-products (e.g. 300,000 tons per year of licensed capacity for its first product, a bio-based BDO).
