Natural Product Research Network for Eastern and Central Africa
The Natural Products Research Network for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA) is a non-political, non-sectarian, non-governmental and non-profit scientific body devoted to the research and innovation of all aspects of natural products research. NAPRECA was conceived by East and Central African scientists in 1984. It was borne from the realization that Africa is rich in biodiversity, but poor in research and innovation in natural products. NAPRECA became a fully-fledged network and started operating in 1988 after that it became affiliated to UNESCO as one of its network programs. A NAPRECA Coordinating Board had its first meeting in Addis Ababa on 1988. NAPRECA branches are currently in: Botswana, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
The overall goals of NAPRECA activities:
a. To initiate and develop research in Natural Products in the Eastern and Central African sub-region;
b. To coordinate and maintain inter-and intra-regional links among different research groups;
c. To foster and maintain research links with scientists in other parts of the world.
