Sustainable Packaging Made With Renewable Resources

Plasticfri is a Swedish-based startup developing sustainable packaging solutions from agricultural waste, wild plants, non-edible plants, and wood fibers. The company’s innovative approach is setting a new standard by creating a new generation of advanced natural materials beyond plastics. By using waste, residues, and side streams, Plasticfri supports a circular economy and reduces pollution. Compared to mainstream alternatives, this technology results in a competitively priced product that is more resistant to mechanical stress and moisture, with high quality and better performance. It also conserves water, energy, and land resources while reducing plastic waste.

The company currently offers film-based and fiber-based products with unique properties. To ensure that Plasticfri’s products meet European Standards, four tests are conducted:

  • Biodegradation Test: Certifies the chemical degradability of the polymer.
  • Eco Toxicity Test: Verifies whether the composted product has an adverse effect on plants.
  • Disintegration Test: Confirms the physical breakdown into very small fragments.
  • Heavy Metals Content Test: Ensures heavy metals content is below the maximum values.

According to the company’s website, Plasticfri’s proprietary technology not only reduces the carbon footprint by 90%, prevents disintegration into microplastics, lowers energy production requirements by 65%, saves 3.5 cubic meters of landfills space per ton, and conserves over 26,000 liters of water per ton, but also contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include Goal 3 (good health and well-being), Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation), Goal 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure), Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities), Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production), Goal 13 (climate action), Goal 14 (life below water), Goal 15 (life on land), and Goal 17 (partnerships for the goals).
