Clean Iron and Green Steel Technologies by Electra

Electra is a startup producing low-carbon clean iron using a variety of ores and powered by intermittent renewable energy. According to Electra, about 1.9 million metric tonnes of steel are produced annually worlwide, mostly by melting high-grade ores with coal and other mineral in furnaces operating at 1,600°C, which emit 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Electra’s goal is to drastically reduce ironmaking emissions, which account for 90% of steel’s manufacturing emissions.

Green Synthesis of Solid Metal Oxides

One-step, environmentally friendly process for the synthesis of solid oxide catalysts. The conventional production of catalysts requires acid-base precipitation with a metal nitrate, producing large volumes of nitrate and halogenated waste and emitting NOx and SOx gases. The extraction of nitrate and other salts generates large volumes of wastewater. This novel synthetic process eliminates aqueous and nitrate waste by using an organic acid, a pure metal, and an oxidizing agent that is usually air.
