U.N. Sustainable Development Goals

Green chemistry plays a critical role in achieving global sustainable development.

What are the U.N. SDGs?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are "a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity." Watch the 1-minute video below to learn all 17 goals.

How does chemistry play a role in the SDGs?

Because chemistry touches so many aspects of our lives, applying the principles of green chemistry is critical for achieving nearly all of the SDGs. With a "do no harm" approach, scientists can protect ecosystems and biodiversity through the development of benign processes, contributing to Good Health and Wellbeing (Goal 3), Life Below Water (Goal 14), and Life on Land (Goal 15). Significant work has already been done to decrease harm in these areas, such as the development of life cycle assessment tools and the environmental justice movement.

By focusing on the responsible use of resources, the creation of safer products, efficient chemical manufacturing, and reducing waste, green chemistry plays a role in achieving goals 9, 12, and 13 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action). For example, green chemistry research has advanced biobased feedstocks and innovative materials for renewable energy, such as in photovoltaics and batteries. Developing and maintaining supportive infrastructure, such as awards like the U.S. EPA's Green Chemistry Challenge, will continue to inspire the development of sustainable technologies.

The U.N. SDGs provide a common vision for scientists across the world. They emphasize that it's not just what we make and if it works; it's also ensuring that what we make and how we make it safeguards the world around us. You are part of the solution. Re-imagine your research through the SDG lens, and let yourself be inspired!
