Stegra is a company focusing on decarbonizing traditionally hard-to-abate sectors, starting with steel production. The company is developing the world’s first large-scale, renewable hydrogen-based steel plant in Boden, Sweden. This facility will use green hydrogen to replace coal as the primary fuel for iron ore reduction, creating “green steel” through a fully integrated, end-to-end hydrogen process. Stegra aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional steel production by switching from coal to green hydrogen and electrifying key stages of steelmaking.
In traditional methods, steel production releases significant CO2 as iron ore is reduced by coke, a coal-derived fuel that bonds with oxygen with ore. Stegra’s process, however, replaces carbon with hydrogen so that the reaction yields water as a byproduct rather than carbon dioxide. This technology has the potential to transform steel manufacturing into a nearly zero-emission industry and serve as a model for sustainable operations. Stegra’s Boden plant is expected to produce approximately 5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2030, paving the way for widespread industrial decarbonization and positioning Stegra as a leading force in clean manufacturing.
