The Place of Law in Technology Transitions: A Case Study from Chemical Risk Assessment

Chemical exposure can produce devasting harm to human health and the environment. The EU regulation requires the testing of substances to ascertain whether they exhibit hazards such that appropriate risk management measures must be applied. Traditionally, toxicity testing has involved using animals as a surrogate for humans. Over the years, the EU has adopted a long-standing policy commitment to comply with the 3Rs principle to Replace, Reduce and Refine the use of animals for the purposes of scientific testing with the aim of full replacement.

Green Chemistry in the EU Legislative Framework

This course will explore the latest regulatory developments around sustainable chemistry, aimed at promoting environmental protection, human health, innovation and economic growth. Green chemistry can play a critical role in achieving these objectives. The course aims to equip the participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complex regulatory landscape of green chemistry in the EU more efficiently.

The P-A-R-C SSbD Toolbox is a structured collection of tools to support designers, developers, risk assessors of chemicals and materials from industry, academia and governments in addressing questions about functionality, chemical safety and environmental sustainability. In addition the toolbox will in time cover socio-economic aspects to support the exploratory work on a potential 5th step of the framework.

The goals of the toolbox are to provide:

→ A structured inventory and overview of tools suited for SSbD assessment and (re-)design;
