Workshop Report on Additional Attributes Beyond Safer for Chemical Selection and Substitution

This report was developed under the Working Party on Risk Management. This report summarises discussions held at a workshop on Additional Attributes Beyond Safer for Chemical Selection and Substitution held in Paris 23-24 September 2024. A draft report was reviewed by workshop participants and the Working Party on Risk Management agreed for the report to be released publicly.  The Acknowledgements were added to this publication by the OECD Secretariat.

Hands-On Workshop on Green & Sustainable Chemistry Tools, Techniques & Metrics

Green Chemistry is not merely a guiding principle but a professional imperative in modern scientific research. this immersive and practice-oriented workshop is designed to equip the next generation of chemistry students, researchers, and R&D professionals with actionable tools and measurable frameworks for integrating sustainability into research and laboratory practices.

Workshop Objectives

The 8th Industrial Green Chemistry World (IGCW)

The Industrial Green Chemistry World (IGCW) Convention & Ecosystem, are a biennially held international convention series, initiated in 2009 with the objective to expand awareness and technical understanding in implementing Industrial Green & Sustainable Chemistry solutions. The IGCW Convention is globally recognised as Asia’s largest Industrial Convention on “Green & Sustainable Chemistry”.

Rapid Communication: Relating Sustainability Metrics to Evaluate Circularity and Material Efficiency

The rapid communication explores how to collect mass balance data (reagent amounts, products, waste) to generate metrics to evaluate material circularity and efficiency for chemical transformations. It explores the relationships between three simple metrics (process mass intensity, e-factor, and recycled content) to explore transformations holistically. There is a short case study exploring how these are applied to evaluate and compare different processes.

Green Chemistry Innovation Scorecard Calculator

This tool is a slightly different approach to accounting for Process Mass Intensity (PMI) by focusing on waste. A joint effort by the IQ Consortium, ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable, and academic leaders, this Green Chemistry Innovation Scorecard web calculator illustrates how green chemistry and engineering innovation can reduce waste mass during bulk active pharmaceutical manufacture. The calculator uses a statistical analysis of 64 bulk active pharmaceutical manufacturing processes encompassing 703 steps across 12 companies to provide a relative process greenness score.
