The special issue on AI and Environmental Science will explore the frontiers of AI applications in sustainability and environmental research within the context of planetary solutions. Given that man-made chemicals and related industrial processes are often underlying causes of adverse environmental consequences, one of the main focuses of this special issue is to highlight novel methodologies in designing safer chemicals and products, driven by AI’s capacity to innovate and predict potential environmental impacts. Additional topics such as AI applications in building predictive climate models, AI’s role in biodiversity conservation, and strategies to mitigate the environmental footprint of AI technologies and infrastructure, will also be considered. Articles using interdisciplinary approaches emphasizing environmental justice and the ethical use of AI are highly encouraged. Together, these subtopics highlight the transformative power of AI in addressing some of the most critical environmental challenges and set the pathway toward a more sustainable future.
