Automated recycling process that removes crucial ingredients to produce new EV batteries. In this process, robots remove modules and cells from discharged batteries. Materials are crushed, shredded, and separated into fractions of metals and plastics. The remaining, a fine black powder called black mass, is purified using hydrometallurgical treatment to recover materials for fresh batteries. Northvolt is building Europe’s largest battery recycling plant and hopes to source 50% of its raw materials from recycling and produce a carbon footprint 90% lower than traditional battery production by 2030.
