Seawater Electrolysis Technology for e-Fuel

Brineworks is a startup developing a seawater electrolysis technology that extracts hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the ocean to create sustainable e-fuel feedstock. This system produces green CO2 and hydrogen without relying on precious metals, offering a cost-effective and scalable solution. Unlike conventional electrodialysis methods, Brineworks’ electrolyzer produces the required acid and base more efficiently, while simultaneously generating large volumes of green hydrogen, a critical component for producing low-carbon fuels.

The process works by acidifying seawater to extract pure CO2, which is then neutralized with a base, allowing Brineworks to capture CO2 for e-fuels or sequester it for permanent carbon removal. This process also triggers natural equilibration, allowing the ocean to absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to mitigate the ecological impacts of extraction.

Built with Earth-abundant materials, Brineworks’ systems prioritize sustainability and affordability. Its simplified approach to carbon extraction from seawater provides a scalable solution to address climate change while preserving marine ecosystems. This technology can be applied in sectors such as aviation and shipping and aligns with global net-zero targets by 2050.
