Planetary metrics for the absolute environmental sustainability assessment of chemicals

Environmental assessments in green chemistry often rely on simplified metrics that enable comparisons between alternative routes but fail to shed light on whether they are truly sustainable in absolute terms, viz. relative to the Earth's ecological capacity. To expand our currently limited knowledge of the extent to which chemicals are environmentally sustainable, here we analyse 492 chemical products through the lens of seven planetary boundaries representing critical biophysical limits that should never be exceeded.

Alternatives assessment: An analysis on progress and future needs for research and practice

Alternatives assessment is a science‐policy approach to support the informed substitution of chemicals of concern in consumer products and industries, with the intent of avoiding regrettable substitution and facilitating the transition to safer, more sustainable chemicals and products. The field of alternatives assessment has grown steadily in recent decades, particularly after the publication of specific frameworks and the inclusion of substitution and alternatives assessment requirements in a number of policy contexts.

openLCA

Tool Owner

OpenLCA is a free, powerful, open-source software for performing Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and footprinting, allowing users to analyze the environmental impacts of products and processes across their entire lifecycle.

Process Mass Intensity Life Cycle Assessment (PMI-LCA) Tool

The PMI-LCA Tool is a high-level estimator of Process Mass Intensity (PMI) and environmental life cycle information that can be customized to fit a wide variety of linear and convergent processes for synthesis of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). An ecoinvent dataset is utilized as the source of the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) data.
