Industrial Scale-Up and Commercial Readiness (TRL 8-9)

Thailanstatin A

Thailanstatin A is a potent natural product isolated from Burkholderia thailandensis MSMB43. It functions as an ultra-potent inhibitor of eukaryotic RNA splicing by binding to the SF3b subunit of the U2 snRNA subcomplex of the spliceosome. This mechanism results in low-nanomolar to sub-nanomolar IC50 values across various human cancer cell lines, including DU-145, NCI-H232A, MDA-MB-231, and SKOV-3.

Calicheamicin

Calicheamicin is a highly potent enediyne antitumor antibiotic from Micromonospora echinospora, which cleaves DNA via sequence-specific double-strand breaks. It is employed as the cytotoxic payload in antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) such as gemtuzumab ozogamicin and inotuzumab ozogamicin for targeted leukemia treatment.

Carbon-neutral power from organic waste

Arbor’s system is a next-generation approach to bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, or BECCS. The company converts waste biomass from timber plantation thinnings into synthetic gas: a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. That gas is then burned in a furnace with pure oxygen, producing water and a high-pressure form of carbon dioxide. That CO2 spins a turbine to generate electricity, before being captured and stored underground. For every ton of carbon dioxide Arbor’s system removes, it also creates up to 1,000 kilowatt-hours of clean electricity.

High-purity specialty chemicals and materials from Food Waste

Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food are lost on farms and in processing. However, this food waste stream contains specialty ingredients and chemicals worth as much as $2,000 per ton.

Hyfe is refining waste to value, and unlocking the full value of every crop, utilizing food-safe solvents and catalysis to turn food waste into high-purity specialty chemicals and materials including bioactives, fibers, oils, cellulose, lignin, and dextrose that maximize profits for food manufacturers.

Sulfadimethoxine

Sulfadimethoxine is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfadimethoxine is used to treat many infections, including treatment of respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections. It is most frequently used in veterinary medicine, although it is approved in some countries for use in humans. Sulfadimethoxine inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) from para-aminobenzoic acid.
